Painting and sculpture have been my natural means
of expression ever since I was a child . My mind is always full of
images and I feel most fulfilled when I am working on my
art, whether my materials are paint, steel, clay or stone.
After high school, I attended Mohawk Valley
Community College and Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute in Utica,
N.Y., and was privileged to study with the late Robert Hoffman. I
later graduated with a Fine Arts Degree from Alfred University.
The responsibilities of marriage and my
growing family made it necessary to discontinue my scholarship to the
School of Visual Arts in New York City. I embarked on many jobs in my
role as father and wage earner, including becoming a sales rep. and
eventually running my own small company. I kept working on my art
projects whenever I could, always holding in my heart the desire to keep
growing as an artist.
Over the years, my work was included in shows at
Munson-William-Proctor Art Annuals, one-man shows at Watertown and
Wellsville Libraries, etc. Galleries have included: Mary Burns
Gallery, Corning N.Y., Lee-Feldman Gallery, Watertown. N.Y., and Great
Artspectations Gallery, Syracuse, N.Y., where I was the Featured Artist
in October 2003.
Recently, with my children grown and gone from the
nest, it was time to make the long-awaited leap from business to
full-time artist. Now I wonder why it took me so long! My days are
now filled with the joy of creating and sharing my art with others.
I volunteer as art teacher at the Salvation Army's
Barnabas Youth Center. I enjoy sharing the love of art and
discovering hidden talents in these eager young people. I also
currently teach sculpture to children and adults at the studios in the
newly-built YMCA at the Fayetteville Towne Center.
In early 2004, I received an Individual Artist's
Grant from the New York State Cultural Resources Council to create
environmental public art. With this funding, I have launched a project
(using recycled materials contributed by local companies and donated
space from the Syracuse City Parks Department) to create a sculpture
garden for the community. I am currently sculpting large formed-steel
benches and tables from which the passers-by may view a changing exhibit
of outdoor sculpture and art by talented local artists, on what was once
a busy, but empty street corner.
Another recent Grant given to our local Enable
Association provides me with the opportunity to work with disabled
adults to help them discover their unique creativity. We will introduce
clients to various sculpture materials, allowing them to express
themselves in new and exciting ways. I truly believe God is
blessing my life and those around me through the beauty of His creative
Spirit!
Many thanks to The Carving
Studio, West Rutland, Vt., and my mentor, "B"Amore, for her
encouragement of my work and the opportunity to continue expanding
my carving skills.
Hope you enjoy your visit.
